Compile a List of Emergency Contacts
Ensure quick access to crucial numbers by compiling a comprehensive emergency contact list. Include family members, close friends, doctors, schools, work, and local emergency services (police, fire, hospital non-emergency lines).
- Gather essential contact information: Family members (cell, home, work, email), Out-of-area contact.
- Include: Close friends/neighbors, Work/School contacts, Doctors/Specialists/Dentist, Pharmacy.
- Add: Veterinarian (if pets), Insurance providers (home, auto, health), Utility companies, Landlord/Property manager.
Create a Communication Plan
Ensure family members can connect during emergencies by establishing a communication plan. Designate primary and out-of-area contacts, decide on methods (text, app, call), and share the plan so everyone knows who to contact and how.
- Designate an out-of-area friend or relative as a central contact point.
- Compile a list of all family members’ phone numbers (cell, home, work) and email addresses.
- Establish primary (e.g., text) and backup (e.g., call, social media message) methods for checking in.
Include Communication Devices
Maintain communication and access to information during evacuation by including relevant devices in your go bag, such as a fully charged mobile phone, portable charger (power bank), and potentially a battery-powered or hand-crank radio.
- Pack a fully charged mobile phone (consider a spare older phone as backup).
- Include a portable power bank (external battery) with sufficient capacity and charging cables for your phone/devices.
- Pack a battery-powered or hand-crank emergency radio (preferably NOAA Weather Radio).
